Steatotic Liver Disease

Steatotic Liver Disease Specialists in London

Steatotic Liver Disease (SLD) refers to a group of conditions where excess fat builds up in your liver. When fat makes up more than 5–10% of your liver’s weight, it can lead to inflammation, scarring, and long-term liver damage.

At Leaders in Liver Health, our consultants diagnose and treat all forms of SLD, including Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), formerly non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and Alcohol-Related Liver Disease (ArLD).

We offer advanced imaging modalities, such as FibroScan® and CT or MRI scan, and detailed blood tests, followed-by tailored lifestyle and medical treatment plans.

Understanding Steatotic Liver Disease

Steatotic Liver Disease (SLD) includes conditions caused by fat accumulation in the liver. It can affect people who drink little or no alcohol as well as those with higher alcohol intake.

There are two main types:

SLD has become one of the most common liver conditions in the UK. Early diagnosis is key to preventing progression and restoring liver health.

Steatotic Liver Disease Symptoms & Risk Factors

Many people with SLD feel well and have no symptoms in the early stages. The condition is often detected during routine blood or imaging tests. Occasionally, the liver may already have scarring (fibrosis), even when the liver enzymes (blood tests) are normal. When symptoms do occur, they can include:

Steatotic Liver Disease FAQs

Yes. In most cases, reducing alcohol intake or improving diet and exercise can reverse liver fat build-up and scarring if caught early.

Untreated SLD can lead to inflammation, fibrosis, and eventually cirrhosis. Early detection prevents long-term damage.

MASLD is linked to metabolic health factors, while ArLD results from excessive alcohol intake. Both can cause liver inflammation and scarring.

You might not feel symptoms. A simple blood test or FibroScan® can detect signs before damage occurs.

If you have diabetes, are overweight, or drink alcohol regularly, regular or annual liver screening is advised.

There is no single drug for SLD at present, but medications to manage the underlying condition, such as for cholesterol, hypertension or diabetes, can help with recovery. In addition, there are medications that can assist with alcohol dependence.
