Dr Gill is a liver specialist with a strong immunological research interest in viral & metabolic liver disease. He undertook his primary medical degree at The University of Leeds and completed post-graduate training in Leeds and London. He has expertise in all areas of liver disease with a focus on viral hepatitis.
He was appointed as a Senior Clinical Lecturer in 2023 at QMUL and an Honorary Consultant Hepatologist at Barts Health NHS Trust. He has strong background in hepatitis B immunology having trained in London and Singapore in world class labs during doctoral and post-doctoral training funded by the Wellcome Trust and NIHR. His current work focusses on investigating defects of immune cells in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) infection in relation to metabolic diseases.
This work relates to his previous research of harnessing the immune response to improve treatment strategies in CHB. He has shown complementary immune restoration with different treatment strategies in CHB, forming the springboard for the continued investigation of novel approaches and treatment strategies in CHB, which has led to multiple novel agents being tested in commercial phase 1, 2 and 3 clinical trials. He has published and contributed to several landmark papers, (>65 peer reviewed articles) and multiple book chapters. He has received the highest clinical research accolades including the Sir Francis Avery Jones Research medal and the Sheila Sherlock Award for research in the field.
